NiCd Battery Reconditioning – Restore Aged Rechargeable Cells

Nickel-cadmium (NiCd; also Ni-Cad batteries are great for powering are great for powering RC “toys” such as raido-controlled airplanes or cars. However using these batteries, hobbiests always run the risk of having the NiCd battery power die enexpecedly and ruining a day of fun.

NiCd batteries are knowon for, over time, losing their capacity. Since these batteries can be used in everything from power tools to computers, power failures can be extremely inconvenient. However, once you become familiar with basic battery reconditioning techniques, you’ll find that this problem can be solved relatively easily.

Some consumers do not know that the way in which they handle their NiCd batteries can greatly affect how long the batteries retain their power. As these batteries age, the nickel crystals tend to enlarge decreasing the total crystal surface area. This reduces the cell capacity and increases internal resistance. Luckily, by slowly discharging each cell from 1V down to 0.4V, the nickel crystals can be re-formed.

It is not possible to recover 100% capacity, however you can greatly prolong the useful life by up 40% by cycling them once per month. The amount of capacity that can be recovered depends on the condition of the battery when you start, the number of cycles the battery has gone through, and the battery age. You can build a simple battery reconditioning circuit using a 4-cell battery pack.

A battery connected to such a circuit will be discharged at about 1900 mA until its voltage reaches 1 V per cell . The discharge current is then reduced to 38 mA until the battery voltage reaches 0.4 V per cell.

When the 4-cell battery pack voltage drops lower than 4 V, the analog switch U4 is closed. The current-set output control voltage drops to 3.8 mV, and the current-sink circuit discharges the battery at a rate of 38 mA. When the battery voltage reaches 1.6 V (0.4 V per cell), the output goes low, switch U2 opens, the current-control voltage goes to zero, and discharge current is set to zero.
